Community and Supportive Services

Over the past year, the Meridian Housing Authority has provided the following Community and Support Services to our residents:  outreach activities, credit and budgeting classes, home ownership opportunities, vocational training, education opportunities, and life skills.

Below is a summary of services:

Case Management (Carousel Place/JT Davis Apartments)

Under the Community and Supportive Services (CSS) program for HOPE VI, MHA case managers link Carousel Place/JT Davis Court residents with community and supportive services before relocation, during relocation and beyond the life of the HOPE VI grant.  Case plans are developed and the appropriate referrals are identified to ensure residents can successfully pursue the services needed.  A total of 190 residents are actively being tracked by case managers.

Family Self-Sufficiency (Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher)

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is designed to assist public housing residents in becoming economically independent and free from public assistance.  The FSS program embraces the entire family structure with its supportive services offered to residents.  These services are coordinated through various community agencies and programs to provide assistance to enhance educational opportunities, job skills training, vocational training, remedial assistance and opportunities for entrepreneurship and home ownership.  Participants may accrue escrow as their income changes due to employment.  The Meridian Housing Authority establishes and maintains the escrow account for each participating resident until the resident completes their FSS goals and graduates from the program.

Neighborhood Network Center

This service is available to all public housing residents.  The neighborhood network center is located in the community building of the Carousel Place Apartments.  Their state of the art facility offers computer classes, Adult Basic Education classes, as well as programs that provide job preparation activities for adults and youth.  After school tutorial programs and summer enrichment opportunities are made available to MHA residents through the NNC.

Pre-Kindergarten Education Opportunities

In a collaborative agreement with the Meridian Public School District, pre-kindergarten classes are being provided on-site at the following MHA locations:  Eastern Gardens, Western Gardens, Magnolia Courts and Carousel Place Apartments.

Instruction is provided by certified teachers and highly qualified teacher assistants.  Full day classes begin at 7:45a.m. and end at 3:00p.m.  The program follows the state pre-kindergarten curriculum, the “Mississippi Early Learning Guidelines for Three and Four Year Old Children”.  Teachers use the Waterford computer based program which introduces children to reading, mathematics and science concepts.  MHA residents receive self-paced instructions on phonics, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary concepts.

Meridian Housing Authority Homeownership Transition Program

The Meridian Housing Authority Homeownership Transition Program allows a total of seventeen (17) single family dwelling units to be placed under a portfolio of MHA’s HUD approved assisted housing program.
