THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMEMT AWARDS MHA $61,734.00 TO
PROVIDE PERMANENT HOUSING ASSISTANCE FOR LOCAL HOMELESS VETERANS
The Meridian Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners along with its administrative staff is pleased to announce that HUD has awarded MHA approximately $61,734.00 to provide permanent housing assistance to local veterans experiencing chronic homelessness.
When: A press conference will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 11:30am at Meridian Housing Authority’s central office training room located at 2425 E Street. The purpose of the presser is to inform the public of a collaborative partnership between MHA, HUD and the Jackson Veteran Administrative Medical Center. The agencies will administer (10) Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers to local homeless veterans from the Meridian vicinity.
Details: The HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) award will allow MHA an opportunity to provide rental assistance for homeless veterans along with case management and clinical services provided by the Jackson VA Medical Center. The VA facility will refer eligible veterans to MHA after prioritizing those veterans experiencing chronic homelessness and various disabilities. The VASH award will aid in assisting veterans in securing long-term housing support and intensive supportive services in the city of Meridian.
Background: After the VA determined the critical need to assist homeless veterans in Meridian, HUD awarded the funding to MHA based on the agency’s “High Administrative Performance” distinction. MHA will also provide local office space for the VASH program in an effort to expedite the VA’s ability to identify (10) eligible families.
The Meridian Housing Authority exists to provide decent, safe and affordable housing opportunities for over 3500 eligible citizens. Additionally, MHA owns and operates 1235 affordable housing apartments and administers 211 Housing Choice Vouchers.
