THE DEPARATMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT AWARDS $188,704.00 IN 2017 CAPITAL FUND EMERGENCY SAFETY AND SECURITY PROCEEDS TO THE MERIDIAN HOUSING AUTHORITY.

The Meridian Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners along with its staff and residents is pleased to announce that HUD has awarded MHA approximately $188,704 to support safety and security measures at the agency.

When:

A press conference will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 11:00am at the Meridian Housing Authority’s Central Office Training Room located at 2425 E Street to inform the public of the significance of the Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program approval and the positive impact this award will have on the security of MHA residents along with assisting in the alleviation of crime throughout the City of Meridian. The funds will be used to install security systems-surveillance cameras and emergency alarm systems at all nine of MHA’s affordable housing communities.

Access to safe housing is a right that all Meridian citizens should enjoy. On October 4, 2017 the HUD Jackson Mississippi Field Office informed MHA that its safety and security application qualified to receive competitive funding from HUD to assist the agency in providing safe housing to the residents of the Meridian Housing Authority. This grant will supply all nine affordable housing communities managed by MHA the tools they need to ensure the safety and security of over 3,500 residents living throughout MHA communities.

Security systems-surveillance camera in addition to the installation of emergency alarm systems will be placed in the following communities: Highway Village 506 Front Street Extended, Mt. View Village 2305 D Street, George Reese Courts 1318 19th Street, Sowashee Courts 2808 Chandler Street, Western Gardens 107 71st Place, Oakland Heights 301 63rd Place, Eastern Gardens 200 23rd Street, Carousel View 4610 Valley Street, Magnolia Courts 1801 24th Street and Mt. Barton 3014 St. Paul Street.

The Meridian Housing Authority exists to provide decent safe and affordable housing opportunities for over 3,500 eligible citizens of Meridian. Additionally, MHA currently owns and operates 1,235 affordable housing apartments and administers 212 Housing Choice Vouchers. MHA also provides 10 Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers (VASH) to local veterans facing chronic homelessness in the City of Meridian.
