Meridian Housing Authority and Greater Meridian Health Clinic to Receive HUD Award on August 9th

What:

Mississippi’s Department of Housing and Redevelopment (HUD) along with the Mississippi State Department of Health will present the Meridian Housing Authority (MHA) and Greater Meridian Health Clinic (GMHC) with the State’s prestigious “Partnership Award.”

This year’s award recognizes the commitment forged between MHA and GMHC for demonstrating the most positive impact on its residents and community.

The recognition will take place at the Mississippi Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (MAHRO) annual state conference which will be held this week in Biloxi, MS.

This community partnership also serves to ensure HUD and MAHRO that collaborative efforts are being sustained to provide affordable, safe and healthy opportunities for all residents of the City of Meridian.

There are approximately fifty-four (54) public housing authorities located throughout the State of Mississippi.

Details:

Since January 12, 2012, the Greater Meridian Health Clinic has provided $100,000 in in-kind contributions in the form of neighborhood health assessments to support the Meridian Housing Authority’s Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant objectives for the George Reese Court/East End Community revitalization efforts.

GMHC has also provided staff time, services and materials to MHA residents over the past two years during the Meridian East End Neighborhood Transformation plan. MHA residents have received comprehensive out patient, on-site health services directed primarily at: prevention and disease control such as obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

Adult and family medicine, maternity care, pediatric care, dental services and WIC services are also provided to MHA residents through the use of GMHC’s mobile health unit.

The estimated value of services provided to MHA residents over the course of this twenty (20) year partnership now exceeds one million dollars. This partnership has greatly improved the quality of life for residents throughout all nine of MHA’s public housing communities.

The Meridian Housing Authority will be recognized for receiving a “High Performer” designation in its Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs.

Nominations were also submitted for HUD’s “Hard Hat Award” and “Special Residents Programs Award.”
