MERIDIAN HOUSING AUTHORITY FAMILIES RECEIVE 3,800 FACE MASKS

Mayor Percy Bland, III partners with MHA to slow the spread of COVID-19”

 WHAT:

City, state and local officials including Meridian Mayor Percy Bland III, Meridian Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners, MHA Executive Director, Ronald J. Turner, Sr. along with the MHA Resident Advisory Board to announce an initiative to slow the spread of CPVOD19 in underserved minority communities in Meridian.  This public occasion highlights the City of Meridian and the Mississippi State Department of Health Disparities and  Equity COVID-19 Response Team’s aggressive efforts to take actions designed to help keep people healthy, reduce exposure to the coronavirus and slow the spread of the disease.  Over 3,800 masks will be distributed to families residing in underserved communities throughout the City of Meridian.

WHEN:

Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.

(The public announcement to explain the method of mask distribution will take place at approximately 11:00 a.m. on the lawn of MHA’s Envision Center training facility.)

WHERE:

The MHA Envision Center located at:  804 42nd Avenue Meridian, MS in the Frank Berry Courts Affordable Housing Community.

 

DETAILS:

An outbreak of a respiratory diseases caused by a novel (new) coronavirus has as of this date been detected in over 200 countries worldwide, including the United States.  Meridian and Lauderdale County has been identified by Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves and Meridian Mayor, Percy Bland, III as a high incident jurisdiction with increased numbers of COVID-19 reported cases.  To date, the state of Mississippi has 9,908 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in addition to over 457 deaths attributed to the disease.  Meridian and Lauderdale County has over 500 cases with over 45 deaths associated with COVID-19.  As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread in an unpredictable manner, statistics show a sizeable increase of cases in underserved minority communities across the country.  The mask distribution campaign is aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 throughout the City of Meridian.

The Meridian Housing Authority was incorporated in 1939 and provides affordable housing opportunities to more than 3,000 residents in the City of Meridian. The agency currently administers 1214 public housing units, 215 Housing Choice Vouchers and 89 privately owned apartments.
