Strong Support Shown at East End Community Meeting

The Meridian Housing Authority has received a HUD Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant to develop a comprehensive plan which will transform a designated segment of East Meridian. A key area of concentration during the CN planning process involves the revitalization of the George Reese Court housing development.

During the 2nd major community meeting, over one hundred (100) participants including local residents; community leaders; city, state and county officials; and members of the faith-based community were on hand to receive an update on the progress of the transition process.

Planning coordinators presented the audience with an informative slide-show presentation updating participants on newly organized task force groups. These groups meet regularly to devise methods to improve housing; employment; health care; education; and other basic needs in the community. The proposed community design was also presented. Pastor Timothy Jones of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist church hosted the meeting which was held in the family life center of the church. Pastor Jones received a long round of applause for his support of the CN endeavors.

Mayor Cheri Barry, along with State Representative of District 82, Charles Young, Jr., City Councilwoman Mary Perry, District Supervisor Wayman Newell, and Mt. Olive Pastor A.D. Lewis, offered input during the planning process. Newly appointed Police Chief, James Reed, addressed the crowd and offered full support to tackle the growing security concerns in the community. Chief Reed also received an update on the East End mini-police sub station which will open around the first week of October.

All East End residents were briefed on the importance of completing an important needs assessment survey which will be instrumental in determining top priorities and key necessities of the community. The George Reese Court resident association conducted a $150.00 cash drawing incentive for a lucky resident who completed the survey. Refreshments for the evening were provided by Sherman Catering Services. Plans are also underway to open a Choice Neighborhood communications center in October 2012.

Your participation is vital to the success of the East End planning process. For more information, contact MHA Community & Supportive Services Director, William Myles at (601) 693-2800 ext 232.
